We are thankful for the men and women who have sacrificed so much and fought for our freedom. Will you join SPIRIT and recognize some of our local Military Heroes? Today we are recognizing Scott Leaf from Washington. Read more about Scott below:
Scott served in the Armed forces for over 20 years. As a young 18 year old he served in the National Guard. Desert Storm was going on and though I didn’t know him then I know he would have been willing to sacrifice himself for all Americans to keep us safe. He joined the Navy after 4 years in the National Guard and spent 6 years on an aircraft carrier in Japan. During that time both his grandfathers passed away. He was unable to leave at those times and missed both funerals but knew serving his country was important.
He then came to Everett for another 4 years where he met and married me. We didn’t want the difficult life of living apart but had to spend our 1st year of marriage separated. He was on a tiny island in the middle of the Indian Ocean. When he came home he made the decision to continue to serve in the Navy Reserve. Then 9/11 happened. I knew my husband would want to be part of securing our country and reluctantly I asked him if he needed to become active duty again. He answered with a ‘not yet’ and I knew what was coming. He didn’t go until 2005, and went to Kuwait to serve as security in the harbor. It was the dangerous job of supporting the supply ships in and out of the harbor so our troops could get the necessary supplies they needed. He was there for over a year. He kept me in the dark as to most of the danger but I learned about much of it after he was home.
After he came home, Scott changed to the Army National Guard and retired a year later. He now continues to serve us as a Corrections Counselor at Monroe prison. His view of service is what makes him a hero to me. He loves this country, freedom, and especially God. He views his 21 years of service as his duty and privilege and never asked for anything except for love and respect from those of us around him.
SPIRIT 105.3 would like to thank GEICO for helping us recognize Military Heroes.
