The winter freeze has hit us. Make sure you are safe inside and out with these emergency tips for your plumbing & heating system.
Plumbing
- Make sure Hoses are detached from outside faucets.
- Hose bibs that are not frost-free need to be covered. (If you are unsure what kind yours is cover it anyway)
- If you have a vacant home or going on vacation this isn’t the time to leave your heat off. We recommend 60-degrees minimum during cold snaps.
- Plumbing cabinets on outside walls- leave the cabinet doors open to get heat to them. (Like a sink cabinet)
- Got pipes in an unheated space like a garage? Take extra care, make sure heat tape is plugged in and working if you have it.
- If heat tape is not an option, remember; it takes longer and much colder temperatures for running water to freeze. Just a trickle of running water could prevent a pipe from freezing.
Heating
- This isn’t the time to run your house cool. You want heat getting to your pipes.
- Make sure CO Detectors are working and in every sleeping area.
- Make sure your furnace filter is clean
- If you have a heat pump and it stops working, remember you have back up heat. This can usually be switched over at the thermostat and is sometimes called Auxiliary heat. This can adequately heat your home until a heating tech is able to come out.
- Heat Pumps are a very efficient way to pull heat out of outside air, but they will all switch to your back up heat below certain temperatures, this is normal. Here is a quick general guide: Conventional Heat Pump on Ducted System: 32 Degrees F, Ductless Heat Pump: 15 Degrees F., Extreme Heat Pump on a Ducted System: 5 Degrees F.
- NEVER bring temporary heat into any part of your home that burns a fossil-fuel. (BBQ, Kerosene Heater, etc…)
