How’s Your Anchor Holding?
Imagine being the captain of a ship and realizing that the anchor you just had the crew throw into the water is made of plastic and won’t hold the ship where you want it to stay. In fact, maybe you get distracted and don’t even realize you’ve been adrift until it’s still too late.
Life is full of false anchors. These are things we rely on for security, it could be a relationship, an addiction, money, the government, or how we look. For me I think sometimes I look for security in what I do for a living – in being successful at it. I think my wife finds security in orderliness.
In the Bible, the Israelites were led out of slavery and to the promise land by God and yet insisted that they needed a human king. A king, they thought would bring them security; be their anchor. But ultimately it was their undoing. The crazy thing is that their true anchor was with them the whole time. He’s with us too. The anchor Himself reassures us:
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9
