What defines you?
My daughter Camille is really into theatre at school. Just this week they had auditions for two different shows that the school is putting on next school year. She was walking around our house practicing a Southern accent, a proper British accent, and a Cockney accent. She prepared and researched but when the audition came she says she felt like her performance was flat. I told her not to draw conclusions, the teacher may have seen it differently than it felt to her.
But then I thought there was an even more important point. Whether she gets a part or not, this does not define her. I realized I was talking to myself too. How often do I define myself by my role at work? Or even as a husband or father? It’s true that in a sense, those things are a part of who we are. But what happens if we blow a big project, our marriage goes south, the kids rebel, or we don’t get the part in the play that we want?
I don’t know about you, but I’m glad we have a deeper, truer, more certain identity. Matthew West says it well in his song… Hello, my name is Child Of The One True King! With all that said… I’m still hoping she gets a part she wants! 🙂
God bless,
– Steve
