Laurie from Aurora Community Church is with us. Welcome to SPIRIT 105.3. How you doing?
Lauri:
I am good. How are you?
Erica:
Well, I’m just delighted to be talking with you because I heard your church family has been up to something good. What did you all do?
Lauri:
We did what we call the great shoe giveaway. So, we have a Clothes Closet for kids who are in kindergarten through 12th grade in the shoreline area. And we realized that people were coming in and they needed shoes, and so we decided, “let’s collect shoes and give them away.” It was incredible. We had a hundred people lined up out the door, just ready to come in and get new shoes for their kids, and it was amazing.
Erica:
I imagine It was amazing and that the gratitude was pretty evident on the faces of the moms and dads.
Lauri:
Absolutely. There were so many happy kids. I remember one coming in and being like, “These are the exact shoes that I needed.” And yeah, it was amazing.
Erica:
You can say God loves you with a pair of shoes, can’t you, Laurie?
Lauri:
Absolutely. Anything we can do to meet the tangible needs of the people in our community can show them how much God loves them.
Erica:
Wow, and it was your congregation, you all came together to raise the money to buy all these cool kicks, right.
Lauri:
We didn’t actually do any money raising. It was just, Hey, go find some shoes that you think a kid would love, and apparently we got the right shoes.
Erica:
So, do you think that this is going to become a thing now? Do you think you’ll do it again?
Lauri:
Yeah, this was actually our second year. We started it in 2023, and we are looking forward to doing it every year from now on.
Erica:
Oh, wow. Well, Laurie, thank you to you and all the church fam at Aurora Community for catching the spirit.
Lauri:
Yes. Thank you.
