Moss is a common roof problem. Left untreated, it can lead to serious problems; the growing moss creates space between the shingles that can allow water to seep underneath the roof’s surface and lead to water, structural, and property damage. The moss itself also acts like a sponge to hold moisture against your roof, which can cause damage.
The good news is that moss is pretty easy to keep at bay with regular maintenance. Moss killer is readily available at home improvement stores and is an effective way to treat the problem. Now is a GREAT time to apply moss killer to your roof here in the Pacific Northwest. You’ll treat any moss that has grown over the damp winter, but before it grabs enough of a foothold to cause damage. On your pitched roof, use a rake or broom to gently remove loose moss. This will expose the hidden base of the moss to help the chemicals penetrate the roots and kill it at its source. Spread the moss killer when your roof is damp or before a light rain to help activate it and spread it to lower levels of the roof. Don’t apply it when you’re expecting a downpour; that will only wash it away.
Once the moss dies, you can gently rake or sweep it away. Rain helps wash it away as well. And whatever you do, resist the urge to pressure wash your roof. It can cause serious damage and void your warranty.
