Once upon a time, we kept the doors unlocked, we solely used our dog as the security system, and we let our kids ride their bikes alone to the candy store. Today we live in a much different world. National Night Out is an annual event (this year on August 4th, 2015) that helps keep our communities safe by uniting relationships between neighbors and law enforcement!
There are so many great reasons to know your neighbors. Not only is it a way to find out how you can best love and serve your neighbors, but it is a great way to find out what skills and needs people around you may have. This can come in incredibly handy in the event of a disaster. Plus, it is one of the most important commandments in the Bible ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’ (Matthew 22:39). What a great way to do that!
National Night out consists of block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts, and other various community events hosted by neighborhoods across the country! Experience activities such as safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events, visits from emergency personnel and exhibits.
Join your city for National Night out and get to know your neighbors and law enforcement. Let’s bring back a true sense of community and take care of one another!
Are you interested in starting your own gathering in your neighborhood? Here are a few ideas to get started!
- Plan a potluck or ice cream social – food always brings people together.
- You can meet around the neighborhood or at your local park
- It doesn’t matter if you live in an apartment or a single-family home. The point is simply to meet your neighbors!
- Does small talk stress you out? Come up with some conversation starters or a few ice breaker games to get people talking.
- You can do this anytime, it doesn’t have to be in conjunction with national night out.
- Register with your city. There may be flyers or pamphlets available. You can register on the National Night Out website and receive some information as well to get you started.
