God renews us on the inside. It’s an inner renewal day after day.
Do you struggle with repeating the same mistakes? Pastor Jesse suggests a divine solution – renewal through Jesus to break negative patterns. Psalm 51 highlights the significance of accepting God’s forgiveness, admitting our wrongs, and experiencing healing. Through Jesus’ sacrifice, we all have the chance to start anew. Let’s keep our eyes on Jesus, soaking up His grace every step of the way!

It’s time for Faith Filter with Pastor Jesse from Grace Community Church in Auburn, and he’s also host of the epic podcast, Bonfire on Purposely. Happy Groundhogs Day to you. I never thought I would say it, but here we are.
Pastor Jesse:
I didn’t have that marked on my calendar, so thank you. Appreciate that.
Erica:
All the memes are flying from the movie, and that’s what everybody thinks about now, the movie, not really the rodent. And of course it’s about a day that keeps repeating over and over. And I feel like Pastor Jesse, we have moments like that in our lives. Moments that we’re not proud of, mistakes we’ve made, regrets we have that we play over and over in our mind. So, I wanted to ask you this week, how do you stop the tape?
Pastor Jesse:
Great question. Yeah. I think with a little comedy, Yogi Berra said, it feels like deja vu all over again.
Erica:
Yes!
Pastor Jesse:
And it’s kind of a play, but sometimes we feel like we’re in a rut and we’re stuck. And it’s the routine and it’s the same thing on Monday and the same thing we did last Tuesday. And how do we snap out of that? The question really comes back to our inner life and what’s happening on the inside. All of us, like you say, we’ve blown it and we’ve got these old tapes of the mistakes we’ve made. And there can be patterns of negative thinking. There can be patterns where we keep going back to guilt and shame. And the good news is that Jesus came to set us free. And the Bible says, God renews us on the inside. It’s an inner renewal day after day.
Even if you’ve got a challenging situation that’s not going to change on the outside, or even a health condition, inwardly, God renews us. And I think of Psalm 51 where David made some terrible decisions, tragic. Yet he received God’s forgiveness. He became a man after God’s own heart. And in Psalm 51, not only does God forgive him of his sin, but God also forgives him and takes away the guilt of the shame of his sin. And guilt and shame can linger but we’ve got to stop when there’s a trigger and go back to those old tapes and to rewind and play it again. How we messed up Corrie Ten Boom, said, God takes our sin, throws it in the deepest ocean, and then puts up a sign, no fishing. And at some point we’ve just got to say that’s it. That’s right. I’m not going to keep replaying those old tapes. And God gives us the strength. The Holy Spirit gives us the power to do that. There’s freedom in Jesus’ name.
Erica:
Amen. And Pastor Jesse, one of the things I love about our Savior is that he’s not replaying our mistakes. What you just said, he’s not thinking about them anymore. He sees us through what he did for us on the cross. We are new. We’re new people because of Him.
Pastor Jesse:
That’s it. And you see, when you open the Bible, Jesus is tough and he is tender, but he never turns away anyone who comes with a contrite spirit. And you see that he catches people in the middle of sin, this woman caught in adultery, and look at the tenderness and the hope He gives her a new start. She’s going to choose purity, but also she can live again. And when someone’s caught in sin, Jesus’ grace is greater than our sin, but we need to receive that grace. And so much in our faith walk, in our relationship with God is that drop from the head to the heart, those 12 inches where we actually receive the grace of God. God’s grace changes us. It’s not the laws of a land, it’s not rules. This is the key. It’s receiving, and you’ve got to receive God’s grace for there to be healing. I say there’s the revealing before the healing. You’ve got to admit your sin. And then there’s the grace that’s greater than the sin and the fullness of healing and restoration is offered by Jesus.
Erica:
Amen. There’s a reason why somebody wrote Amazing Grace. Pastor Jesse from Grace Community Church and host of the Epic Podcast, bonfire on purposely. Thank you as always for sharing your wisdom and hanging out with us.
Pastor Jesse:
Let’s keep our eyes on Jesus and keep receiving His grace. So we have lots of grace to give to other people. God’s going to do it. Stay faithful, Erica. Appreciate you.
Erica:
You too, my friend. Palm’s open. I’m ready to receive.
Pastor Jesse:
Amen.
