Erica:
Spirit 1053. Hi, this is Erica.
Colton:
Hey, Erica, it’s Colton. How are you?
Erica:
Colton, it’s so awesome to hear from you.
Colton:
Likewise. Thanks for making some time today.
Erica:
Oh my goodness. Thank you. And I’ll tell you what, I cannot stop dancing every time you start singing on this radio station. I really appreciate your new music.
Colton:
Thank you so much. Thanks for playing it.
Erica:
My light. We need this song so much because I’ve been thinking a lot about what the Bible says. You and I, we want the floodlights on our future and God is like, here, I’ll give you just enough light to see a little bit ahead, but I really want you to walk with me and trust me, and every time I hear your song, I think about that.
Colton:
Yes, that’s so good. Absolutely right. Yeah. I mean, I think sometimes the most simple messages can make the greatest impact, and I feel like this song is living proof of that. It comes from Psalm 119 says, God’s word is a lamp into our feet, a light into our path. And it’s kind of what you just talked about. I think that God’s word has the ability to illuminate things, that even if we’ve heard the same scripture over and over again, if it’s a new season, God has the ability to illuminate something new to us through his Word. I just wanted to write a song that’s super fun, super catchy, but at the same time have a lot of depth and I’m so glad that you guys are enjoying it.
Erica:
Oh, it’s wonderful. When it gets dark in your life, Colton, how does God show you that He is the light? How does He show up and show you that he’s there?
Colton:
Take David and Goliath. I don’t think it was when David hit the battlefield that all of a sudden he was equipped for the task. I think it was in all the little things leading up to that moment. And I think the same can be true for us. I think if we make spending time with God a non-negotiable in our everyday life, just like hopefully brushing your teeth is a non-negotiable. Spend 15 minutes with God every day, and when those trials or those dark times do come, we’re equipped for the job. And it doesn’t feel like this ultimate fight or flight moment that I’ve totally been there. I know what that feels like, but I think it’s really important to make it a non-negotiable. Spend every day with God that you can, and when those moments come, you’ll be ready for ’em.
Erica:
Absolutely. And when I think about David as a shepherd fighting off the lions and the bears, God delivered him from them so he knew God can deliver him from this nine foot beast of a giant.
Colton:
That’s right. That’s exactly right. Because he knew who was fighting with him. That’s kind of what he told Goliath as well. He is like, Hey, you ain’t got to take it up with me. You got to take it up with a big man.
Erica:
Oh, that’s so true. Amen. Our kids are getting ready to go back to school, Colton, here in the Pacific Northwest. And I wonder, do you have a little back to school pep talk? Like if you picture a kid sitting on a bus and hearing your words right now, what would you say to encourage them?
Colton:
Oh man. Man. I would just say, be who you know to be. Don’t let anyone else dictate who you are, and don’t let anyone else steal that from you. No one else can be you better than you. Find good friends who will pick you up instead of tear you down, and yeah, have fun.
Erica:
I think that’s awesome. Perfect. And summer is definitely fading away because the pumpkin spice latte has returned. Colton, are you a fan?
Colton:
Hallelujah. Oh, I’m a fan. I’m a fan, baby. Let’s go pumpkin spice all day long.
Erica:
Do you get the whipped cream or no whip?
Colton:
Oh, whipped cream. If, okay, here’s the deal. If you’re going to do it, you can’t just go tiptoe in. You got to dive in. You got to give the whole experience, the whipped cream for me.
Erica:
Okay. So I was reading today in USA today, some marketing guy from Starbucks says, the PSL is something that you can depend on. When it comes back, it’s something that you’ve remembered over the years and it’s like, okay, something in my life is normal and predictable and comforting, and I have to tell you, I’m over here going. Yeah, amen.
Colton:
It is. It is. It just brings a type of joy. It just does. It’s just like, ah, you have a pumpkin spice latte. You’re sipping on that thing. You can be going through some tough times, but you just think today’s going to be okay. It just is.
Erica:
I couldn’t agree more with you. I’m going to bring up your girls now. You’re the father of beautiful twin girls. How are you enjoying that, Colton?
Colton:
Oh my gosh. It’s the best thing ever. Being a dad is my favorite thing in the world. They just celebrated a third birthday last week. So it is a fun house. It is a busy house, but it is fun and they’re having full-blown conversations and so curious about the world. What’s so cool about having kids is they kind of reignite that spark of loving life again, ain every adult’s heart, things that maybe you have taken for granted or maybe even you’ve been jaded towards. But I remember we’ve been to Disneyland a couple times and it’s like experiencing it for the first time again. Their eyes just light up and everything is exciting and it’s just so much fun. They bring so much life into our house and we are loving it.
Erica:
I’m so glad. My sister, I clearly remember this, used to put barrettes in my dad’s hair and he let her, do your girls ever do anything like that to you?
Colton:
So they like getting their hair cut. They have a couple of different people that cut their hair, and so they like cutting dad’s hair. Of course, we don’t give them real scissors. Hallelujah. But yeah, they have these little wooden scissors and they put the cape on, the whole nine yards and they love doing da-da’s hair. Okay.
Erica:
That is so amusing to me on a few levels because I would say you have the coolest hair in Christian music, so…
Colton:
Well, that is very kind. We won’t tell Jordan Feliz what you just said.
Erica:
No, it’s our secret. Hey, Colton, we’re so excited that you and Jordan are coming to the Pacific Northwest. You’ve been here before, right?
Colton:
Yes, we have. But we’re so excited to come back, Jordan, and I’ve been friends for a long time, so I’m glad this has finally worked out for us. It’s funny, we’ve been talking about pumpkin spice lattes, which just kind of means that you and I are bougie, right?
Erica:
Yes.
Colton:
And we can spot the bougieness in other people.
Erica:
Yes.
Colton:
And Jordan is a fellow bougie person. So perfect. We have hit it off over various things along the years, so we’re going to have a fun night on the Love and Light tour, and so excited to have you guys out.
Erica:
Oh, it’s going to be awesome. Thank you so much for your time today, Colton, and God bless you and your family. You’re just wonderful people and we appreciate all the hope you’re bringing every day on the radio.
Colton:
Thank you so much, and thank you again for making time today.
