It can be really easy to fall into a season where you feel like you aren’t doing what you need to do when it comes to your faith and connecting with Jesus. I have been in a season where it’s been harder than normal to find the routine. Last year, my daughter was in the hospital with Pneumomediastinum and the flu and it was a couple of scary days for us. Since then she has been afraid of being alone. She doesn’t like to be in any area of our house alone and will seek us out to be with her. She has been sleeping on a mattress on our floor because her fears increase at night. While we are working on her fears in a variety of ways, it has made a few things more complicated in my life. Spending quiet time alone with God has become very difficult. I’ve been beating myself up because it isn’t how I want it to be and I’ve created this ideal in my brain of what it should look like.
Here is what I envision:
- A cozy blanket.
- A warm cup of coffee or tea
- My Bible
- A favorite pen
- The sun streaming gently through the window
- A meaningful moment where God speaks to me
God has been gently reminding me in this season that quiet time doesn’t have to live up to a certain standard. He just wants to spend time together. When I beat myself up on Sunday when my family is sick and have to watch the sermon online, or when I listen to a podcast to soak in God’s word while I’m doing dishes, this is connection with God. It might not be the social media picture of what quiet time looks like, but God doesn’t require perfection. He just requires me to show up as I am….even if my daughter is sitting next to me.
If you find yourself in that place too, a place where you are putting off showing up to talk to God until you can do it perfectly, let me encourage you to get started today. God wants to speak to you.
