We’ll call it Steve’s No Good Very Bad Days. I lost my cell phone. I was at the store looking for a dryer vent tube. Yes…my life is glamorous. When I got home, I didn’t have my phone. I could see the phone was still at the store using the find my iphone app. I went back to the store. Nobody had turned it in. Thinking I left it in the cart, I looked in every one I could find. No dice. I went home, feeling ridiculous.
The next day, my daughter Camille and I went back, thinking a fresh pair of eyes would find it. While we were outside the store, we heard a very loud crash. An SUV had slammed into a parked car, sending the car over the parking median and lodging the SUV on top of the median. The driver stumbled out of the SUV and shook on the ground. We ran up to the scene and called 911 while store employees tended to the driver. (I used Camille’s phone). The police came, the driver was taken away in an ambulance – it looked like he would be okay – at least physically.
We prayed with his girlfriend who was there but thankfully not in the vehicle with him. We talked to the police. Then it was time to go home. I clicked my key to remind me where we parked. Nothing. Then it dawned on us. The other car, the one that was parked and got slammed into, that was our car!! The car ended up being totaled – and it occurred to me that if I had kept track of my cell phone, I’d still have my car. Well a little bit of perspective changes everything. Several things occurred to me that showed me that God was in this whole thing.
First of all, we could have been in the car when this happened. Second, somebody else could have been walking nearby and been hurt or killed. Third, the guy who ran into us has problems that are far worse than anything we are facing and desperately needs prayer. Fourth, because we were there, we were able to pray with his girlfriend – who knows what that touch from God might result in? Had we not been there perhaps all of those other factors would have been different and the situation could have been worse. How often do we look at a situation from only one perspective, and miss what God is doing in the middle of it? Oh, and I found my cell phone the next day.
