(Mukilteo – WA) Julieta Altamirano-Crosby of Snohomish County has been recognized as a SPIRIT 105.3 “Unsung Hero.”
Through her personal experience of moving from Mexico six years ago, and becoming bilingual, Julieta has started the WA-GRO (Washington and Guerrero) Association to work as an agency for the Guerrero community to help them receive benefits such as educational, health, ecological, and technological contributing to their society. Since it first launched in 2012, the foundation has continue to grow to create 7 programs locally and in Mexico. One example of how the nonprofit helps the community is by providing tools to parents and students in order to get the most out of their education. They offer GED, ELL Classes, and computer time, to be able to adapt the adults to help their kids with the idea that if the parents are better educated, then their children will be better educated too.
Most recently, Julieta was contacted directly by the victims of the apartment fires off of Casino Road in Everett and was asked to help advocate for them. Within just a few days, she was able to connect families with the Catholic Services, the Mexican Consulate and locate legal representation for these families to protect them from being victims yet again. Since the fire, Julieta and WA-GRO have been working on several projects including fundraisers and donation collection sites in order to help the fire victims.
Julieta uses her gift of helping others in her community to be the best that they could be.
With a servant’s heart and a passion for others, Julieta is a shining example of the “SPIRIT of Seattle.” It’s an honor and a privilege to recognize him as one of our “Unsung Heroes.”
