Freshly sharpened pencils and a big, yellow bus await. For me, it was the night before Kindergarten that I remember most. Perhaps it’s because my mom was a teacher herself; but she knew just how to turn my nerves into excitement. ‘Fashion Show!’ she exclaimed, and then promptly had me try on my new outfits. On that late summer evening on our front porch, I modeled my red Snoopy Backpack as she snapped pictures on our camera and told me all the wonderful adventures that lay ahead. She squeezed me tight and tucked me in with a smile and a sentence: ‘I’m so proud of you.’
