Well, it has arrived. The clocks rolled back, most of your appliances are up-to-date, and suddenly it’s pitch black at 4:30pm, and you’re standing in the kitchen wondering if it’s bedtime or just Tuesday.
If you dread the big dark, I get it. But after some serious squinting at the bright side (a flashlight may have been involved), we actually found a few.
So, I present to you a Top 10 list of silver-linings.
#10
Forgot about your groceries on the porch? No problem, “natures refrigerator” kept ’em ice cold!
#9
Wearing a blanket as a garment is now “seasonally appropriate.”
#8
Candle lovers, unite! In July, lighting a candle is a…choice. At 4:30pm in November, it’s a utility.
#7
Every dinner is a “late” dinner. It’s pitch black at 5pm, so 6:30 feels like a midnight feast. You’re basically living in Europe.
#6
Christmas lights are now a structural necessity. No one can judge you for putting them up early. You’re more than festive. You’re providing infrastructure.
#5
You no longer have to stay up late to catch the sunset. You can now enjoy a dramatic pink sky while still wearing your work lanyard.
#4
Soup can be your whole personality. You can make a giant pot on Sunday and be the kind of person who “has soup” all week.
#3
Permission to slow it all down. Books! Quilts! Fireplace crackling with a pet curled up next to you.
#2
Guilt-free canceling. “It’s already dark” is a universally accepted reason to bail on plans. Nobody argues with the dark. Also acceptable: “It’s really windy.”
And… the #1 upside to the Big Dark…
“The Light Shines in the Darkness and the darkness has not overcome it.” John 1:5.
