Choosing a college major is a big decision. You want one that will offer a rewarding career, a living wage, and long-term employment prospects. With so many new and innovative areas of study popping up, it can be hard to know whether some of them will stand the test of time in the marketplace, or if you should stick with more generalized, traditional degree options.
At Northwest University we pride ourselves on offering programs that are both innovative and enduring. It is our mission to set students up for long-term career success while meeting current industry needs. One such degree program is UX Design.
What Is UX Design?
“UX” is industry shorthand for “User Experience.” A degree in User Experience Design prepares you to design the end-user interface of websites, mobile apps, and software programs. If you think about it, you are constantly interacting with technology on your phone, computer, tablet, and other devices. The screens that you see and interact with are specifically designed to optimize your experience while meeting the vendor’s goals (for example, enticing you to click the “buy now” button).
And when they’re not designed well, you notice. Think about the last time you used a cumbersome software program or had trouble navigating a website. You probably avoided using it again. A degree in User Experience Design gives you the opportunity to improve the user experience, increase app or software performance, and work at the intersection of humanity and technology.
What Will I Learn in UX Design?
UX Design students will take classes in art and design, psychology, human factors, and computer engineering. Creative students choose the program because of its interdisciplinary nature combining art, design, psychology, and engineering. Those interested in tech love it because of the unlimited career opportunities with technology companies around the world. As the world becomes increasingly dependent upon technology platforms, it’s clear that the need for individuals skilled in UX Design isn’t going away and that it’s a great degree choice for both new professionals and those looking to retrain into a new career.
