I was reading earlier this week in Matthew 14 when Jesus walks on water. It’s a passage known to many, but as I was reading, the Lord provided a new revelation that I had not truly seen before.
Matthew 14:25-33 says, “And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.” And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshipped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
If you are at all familiar with this passage then you know it puts on display the power of Jesus to walk on water, call Peter out of the boat and then save him when he begins to doubt. Jesus was proving time and time again that He was who He said He was.
What stood out to me was the simple truth of Peter’s faith. It was his faith in Jesus and the power of Christ working through him that allowed him to step out of the boat and begin walking on water. But it was his almost immediate lack of faith and perspective shift that caused him to begin to sink.
The second he took his eyes of his Savior and placed them on his circumstance, was the moment things began to take a turn.
It got me thinking about how often my life begins to take a turn when I take my eyes of my Savior and place them on my circumstances. The fear and doubt almost immediately begin to creep in. Even in the current circumstances we find ourselves in, it would be easy to look around us at all of the chaos, and fall into doubt or fear or worry or anxiety. But if we firmly fix our eyes on Jesus, we have no reason to fear the waves of life when our miracle-working, walking-on-water Savior is by our side. May we fix our eyes on Jesus today and have a bold faith for what He is calling us out of the boat and into today.
