Mrs. Rawlins has gone above and beyond to teach her Highly Capable 3rd grade class this year, entirely remotely. She has the patience of a saint to lead this group of kids through remote learning, teaching them more difficult vocabulary, higher level math, and to ensure they are excited about school. She’s brought in an interesting podcast, talked thoroughly with the class about having a growth mindset, and even took them on a virtual field trip to the San Diego Zoo. On top of keeping her kids engaged in remote learning (which is tough as it is), she has also been working through caring for, and ultimately taking in an aging parent to live with her. She is working through all the required paperwork, caring for her mother, and teaching remotely in a pandemic.
Finally, as a parent, I’ve seen our daughter grow by leaps and bounds with Mrs. Rawlins as a teacher, as I’m sure other parents have. She also communicates often and in depth with us parents to keep us updated on changes, how she’s thinking about the class and how best to adapt to remote learning in different seasons, when the next bag pick up is, letting us know that she still wants the kids to be able to have a Valentine’s Day party (voluntary participation.)
Mrs. Rawlins has been one of the best teachers our daughter has had (and there’ve been a few other really good ones.) She definitely deserves a nod for being an exceptional teacher.
