When you’re talking to someone about a roof repair or replacement, you need to know the proper terms to accurately describe what’s going on to the roofing professionals, and to understand the company’s solution. Here are common roofing terms and their definitions.
- Eave: the roof overhang after the roof meets the exterior wall; most eaves are closed off and finished with soffits
- Fascia: board that faces outward (perpendicular to the soffit) that makes your roof appear finished; gutters are on top of the fascia board
- Flashing: pieces of metal at joints and around the base of chimneys or vents that prevent water seepage
- Louvers: slatted pieces in the soffit that allow air flow between the attic and the outside of the house
- Pitch: the slope of the roof; a flat roof has a has a slight pitch for water drainage (usually less than 10%) while a steep roof has a pitch of 25% or more. Most residential roofs have a standard pitch, which falls in between the two extremes.
- Rafters and Trusses: rafters are the supporting frame of the top of the home; trusses supplement the rafters to provide specific supports for certain uses or engineered spaces
- Ridge or Valley: the intersection of two slopes in the roof; a ridge happens at the top and a valley is concave
- Sheathing: the boards attached to the rafters that cover the house; roofing materials are attached to the sheathing
- Underlayment: a sheet of protective asphalt material that goes on top of the sheathing; also called tar paper
