2 Corinthians 8:9 says, “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.”
This is the story of our Savior. He was rich, dwelling in his Father’s presence, situated upon his throne, constantly worshipped and adorned by all of Heaven. Yet he chose to step down from it all, he emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, and being found in human form – he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross. This is the grace of our King. You and I will never feel the sting of death because Jesus died in our place. We will never taste the wrath of God, because God’s wrath was poured upon Jesus.
We have been adopted as God’s children, redeemed from our bondage, our sin has been atoned for, and the record of debt that was stacked against us has been cancelled. We are forgiven; we are restored; we are forever God’s because Jesus chose to die in our place. Will we ever fully comprehend the love of God for us witnessed through the death and resurrection of Jesus this side of heaven? Oh how great this love is! Jesus did not cling to his riches, rather he chose to be ridiculed, doubted, beaten, tortured, and crucified so that you and I could share in his eternal wealth. This is the story of our Savior. And this is our story, this is our song, so let us praise our Savior and King all the day long!
Prayer: We are too quick to forget the great cost of our salvation. Throughout today, thank Jesus that though he was rich, for our sake he became poor, so that we by his poverty, by his death, might become rich and enjoy God forever.
