Who knew a low-maintenance, frugal Valentine’s Day is actually the most romantic?
My parents, evidently.
See, they both unapologetically enjoy saving a pretty penny. No jewelry; no fancy night out needed. Instead, you’ll find one simple grocery-store bouquet of carnations on the dining room table: My moms favorite flower. I used to consider it odd, until I realized her reasoning: They are inexpensive and last the longest.
And they never buy each other a new card. Instead, they re-sign the old one. Which is the same one as last year, and the same one as the year before. My mom puts the card on the kitchen windowsill, and each year they have fun re-reading little notes.
They’ve used up so much space they are on to the back of the card now.
Simple, quirky things like this endear me to my parents. I’m sure they’ve given me a lot of advice over the years about money and love and life. But its their consistent example, just in daily living, that resonates the deepest.
