Time magazine unveils its choice for the most impactful newsmaker and world influencer of 2015 today. The magazine released its shortlist of diverse finalists this week; it includes (Islamic State leader Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi). Black Lives Matter activists also made the cut, as well as world leaders Angela Merkel and Vladimir Putin. And yes, Donald Trump is among the finalists. Another 2016 hopeful, Democrat Bernie Sanders, was declared the winner of an online readers’ poll for Person of the Year on Monday.
The state is one step closer to charging drivers for every mile they drive. Facing declining gas tax revenues from more efficient cars, lawmakers have asked the state’s Transportation Commission to look at alternatives for raising money to maintain and build state roads. If state lawmakers follow the recommendation passed Tuesday by the state’s Transportation Commission, drivers could start testing the so-called road usage charge in 2017.

No one was injured when a hoverboard caught fire at a mall in Auburn yesterday morning. Witnesses describe hearing an explosion and seeing flames erupting from the popular device in a hallway of The Outlet Collection around 11:30 am. An employee from a mall kiosk that sells the boards was demonstrating how they work when another board caught fire, shoppers said ‘It just exploded — just combusted into flames for no reason,’ They believe it overheated while charging.
