Happy Easter! Okay maybe you’re thinking that I’m a little late. After all, Easter is over, right?
My family and I go to a church that is in some ways pretty contemporary, but on the other hand still observes some fairly old traditions. One of those is that Easter is a season, rather than just a day. You may or may not be interested in traditions, but I think they’re on to something here.
If we think of Jesus’ resurrection like we think of Easter – as something that happened and is now in the past, we miss a lot of its power and meaning. His resurrection was an event, but it was also a beginning … for you and for me. It is our invitation to live a new life as a new person, to have our past failures and mistakes, and even really rotten things we’ve done that weren’t mistakes, washed away. Not only that, death itself has been defeated!
Maybe you’re thinking “I’ve already had this Sunday School lesson over and over again.”
Please stop with me, and really try to get a hold of how enormous that news really is. Maybe this year you and I can really live in Easter joy way beyond one Sunday.
