We are thankful for the men and women who have sacrificed so much and fought for our freedom. Will you join SPIRIT and recognize some of our local Military Heroes? Today we are recognizing Marta Martin from Seattle. Read more about Marta below:
NEW ORLEANS, La. – In addition to creating and running NavyGirl.org, a long-standing web resource familiar to many throughout the Navy Reserve, Petty Officer 1st Class Marta Martin has committed to serving our nation as a member of the United States Navy Reserve assigned to Navy Recruiting District New Orleans.
Since 45 days after our nation was attacked on 9/11, the Vietnam born graduate of Rainier Beach High School in Seattle has served her nation as a member of either the active or the reserve component of the U.S. Navy. Her military career has afforded her a college education, valuable training, and experiences of a lifetime; however, Martin’s military experience began long before 9/11.
“I was born at the end of the Vietnam War. I was suffering from malnutrition and tuberculosis when American Soldiers rescued and took me to an orphanage where I was given an opportunity to survive and have a better life. I then was adopted and brought to America as a Naturalized Citizen,” said Martin. “Joining the Navy Reserve after 9/11 just seemed to be the right thing to do and my way to make the most of the opportunities I was given.”
The skills and core values she has gained while serving have given her the tools to succeed in the multiple ventures she has undertaken.
“The experience and training I have received while in the Navy Reserve has guided me to be the Sailor that I was destined to be,” said Martin. “With Reserve and Active duty experience behind me, my dedication and commitment to accomplishing the mission and giving back to others is not only an expectation of myself but is a day-to-day calling that sets me apart.”
Looking forward, Martin believes tomorrow’s Navy needs to stay focused on its long adopted values. “In my Navy, I am honored to give back to others what has been given to me as my opportunity to motivate, encourage and inspire Sailors to achieve their highest potential. I stay committed to excellence.”
Vice Admiral Braun, Chief of the Navy Reserve, is proud to lead such a talented and dedicated group of Sailors. “The commitment of our talented Sailors to the Navy, their shipmates and their community is truly inspirational,” said Braun. “Their continued dedicated service in support of the Navy, Marine Corps and Joint Force lends credence to our motto: ‘Ready Now. Anytime, Anywhere.’”
