My oldest son, Bradley, broke his wrist last week playing soccer. For the past several days we’ve been helping him bathe, get dressed, and even style his hair – though we had to give that one up since apparently we don’t “do it right”. Since it’s his right wrist and he is right-handed, we’ve also been helping him write out his homework.
After a few days focused on helping Bradley, we noticed his younger brother, Hayden, suddenly making more frequent requests of his own. “Mom, can you wash my back tonight?” “Dad, can you make me grilled cheese and tomato soup, too?” “Hey, ya wanna watch a little HGTV with me on the couch?” (insert light-bulb moment here!)
We realized Hayden was jealous of the love and attention his brother was getting.
Ok. So, after we scrubbed Hayden’s back and enjoyed some couch time, we reminded him that he is just as special to us as his brother and that we love him so much. If he were in his brothers’ place, we would do the same for him.
I love moments like this, because it helps to remind me how much God, our Father loves us. It says in the Bible that His love for us is so strong that He’s jealous for our love and devotion. His jealousy encourages us to make Him our highest priority, putting Him before all else and by doing so He will look out for our best interests. Since we belong to Him, He wants us to succeed in all we do…in our relationship with Him, in our parenting, in our marriages, financially…in every way possible.
That’s kind of flattering isn’t it? The creator of all things wants our love.
Blessings,
Paul Fredricks
