It was a chilly, blustery day and the wind seemed to be blowing from every direction as it swirled the leaves around me. Zipping up my jacket, I stepped up my pace as I walked through the park, and was thankful for the soft warm scarf around my neck.
Big gusts of wind made a swooshing sound as they whipped through the trees. I stopped and looked up as I watched in awe as the majestic Douglas-firs swayed back and forth. These enormous trees over 100 feet tall that seemed so sturdy when there was no wind blowing through them were actually incredibly flexible. Their lush evergreen branches and sturdy upper trunks moved with the gusts of wind, which could otherwise be destructive to them if they weren’t so flexible.
Then I remembered why they’re able to bend and sway with the wind. It’s because their roots go deep down in the soil. And the deeper the roots, the more the trees are able to withstand strong winds.
God then reminded me the importance of that same principle in our life. If we build our lives on him and let our roots grow down deep in the rich fertile soil of his love, then our faith will be strengthened and we, too, will be able to withstand the winds of strife and turmoil when mighty gusts blow through our life.
Paul encourages us in Colossians 2:6-7 when he writes, “So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.”
With renewed faith, I headed back home, thankful that I had decided to brave the windy weather and not forgo my walk, or I would have missed the valuable lesson he taught me on that blustery, chilly afternoon.
In Christ’s love,
Martha
