What do you do with unpleasant feelings? They always seem to catch me off guard. Sometimes I feel that if I’m not happy, comfortable, or excited, then there’s something wrong; that feeling uncomfortable is a problem I need to solve rather than a gift.
It was a beautiful message at church that made me reflect on this. The pastor, speaking on Jesus’ anguish the night before he died, asked ‘How is your suffering helping you to get to know Jesus better?’ That helped me see my discomfort as a teacher. Jesus was a man of sorrows, familiar with grief. He’s been there. It puts my suffering in perspective, sometimes even eliminating it.
