(Monroe – WA) Barbara Beck of Monroe has been recognized as a SPIRIT 105.3 “Unsung Hero.”
When a child is being treated overnight in the hospital, hours seem like days and days seem like years. Three years ago, Barbara’s son spent many weeks in the hospital, being treated for Chrone’s Disease. To make time pass quicker Barbara brought it upon herself to tidy up the smoking area. She started referring it to “The Smoke Shack” which soon became a ministry for families spending time at Children’s. Barbara restructured this area to be a spot where families could lift each other up. Barbara placed books for guests to write praises, prayers, feelings, or words of encouragement, a bulletin board for people to attach notes. Visitors used these journals as an outlet to write out exactly what they were going through. Eventually, other families started bringing books and Bibles to pass the time, even donating clothes for families to change into when they had to spend the night unexpectedly.
What once was a waiting room where visitors would wait anxiously, shortly became a place of ministry to neighbors in Seattle. Nobody wishes to have a child stay in the hospital, but when family members are able to read stories of what others are going through and hear testimonies of God’s healing miracles, it gives them encouragement and a sense of hope. When asked about the original inspiration for “The Smoke Shack,” Barbara doesn’t like to take credit. She wants to give God the glory because He led her with the idea and provided her with the supplies to make it happen.
With a servant’s heart and a passion for others, Barbara is a shining example of the “SPIRIT of Seattle.” It’s an honor and a privilege to recognize her as one of our “Unsung Heroes.”
