New and Improved

There’s a word you’ll hear thrown around a lot in this first month of 2013… ‘NEW’. Phrases like “Happy NEW year, NEW for 2013, a NEW season” abound.

For years, savvy product pros have known our tendency to drift towards products that display the words “New and Improved”- often times making extremely minor, insignificant changes to a product, slapping the ‘new and improved’ sticker on the front of the box, and standing back to watch the American public (you and I) flock to buy it up in droves, all the while smiling to themselves because they know that the product is essentially the same as it was last month.

We can’t help it, we just like things that are new… it’s the idea of the unknown, the untested, or the fact that our newer widget has features and a design that are different (and hopefully better) than our neighbors widget. 

In Lamentations, God’s word says,

Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed,
for his compassions never fail.

They are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.

There’s that word… new. What a promise from Him that every day his compassions (mercy, grace, love) are new- with facets, and features that you’ve never experienced!

Remember when we were kids, and during a game or activity if things weren’t going quite right, we could declare a ‘do over’? It was like a free pass to stop the action, and to give yourself one more attempt to get it right? Have you ever wished for a ‘do over’ clause in life? A chance to repeat a whole day, with different thoughts, attitudes, words, and actions? According to the verse above, God’s grants us that every day! He loves you enough to not hold yesterday’s mistakes against you today… and to let you declare a ‘do over’ any day you need one. And while we can’t always remove the consequences of our actions, we can find His grace, mercy and forgiveness as brand new every day.
