What Defines You?

What defines you?

My daughter Camille is really into theatre at school. Just this week they had auditions for two different shows that the school is putting on next school year. She was walking around our house practicing a Southern accent, a proper British accent, and a Cockney accent. She prepared and researched but when the audition came she says she felt like her performance was flat. I told her not to draw conclusions, the teacher may have seen it differently than it felt to her.

But then I thought there was an even more important point. Whether she gets a part or not, this does not define her. I realized I was talking to myself too. How often do I define myself by my role at work? Or even as a husband or father? It’s true that in a sense, those things are a part of who we are. But what happens if we blow a big project, our marriage goes south, the kids rebel, or we don’t get the part in the play that we want?

I don’t know about you, but I’m glad we have a deeper, truer, more certain identity. Matthew West says it well in his song… Hello, my name is Child Of The One True King! With all that said… I’m still hoping she gets a part she wants! :)

God bless,

- Steve

Steve Thank you for sharing that with us. I would consider this a privilege to share with you what defines me. GOD has with HIS mercy and grace allowed me to provide the most advanced life saving armor to our soldiers today. Yet the enemy works tirelessly and without reservation to keep us suppressed. I thank GOD for HIS children that shine that light of encouragement and illuminate that path that is of most difficulty. GOD Bless you.

I was originally thinking about writing about how grateful I am, heading into this holiday season, that my family and I have been so incredibly blessed in so many ways. We have been, and I am. But my friend’s situation got me thinking about how the sting of suffering, whether it’s physical, relational, or psychological, can be even more acute in a season when we have a cultural expectation of joy and happiness.
