Puget Sound Honor Flight Fundraiser

Puget Sound Honor Flight is a non-profit organization. Their mission is to transport Western Washington heroes on “One Last Mission” – a trip to Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect at the memorials built in their honor. This trip is free to the veteran, and made possible solely through individual donations and corporate support – no Federal funds are allocated to this program. With the hard work and dedication of Honor Flight hubs throughout the U.S., and their communities, over 117,500 veterans have made this cathartic journey.

Last year we were able to sponsor six Veterans! We hope to sponsor 36 veterans this year, which is equivalent to $36,000. We are requesting donations as well as items for the Silent Auction.

Blind Descent with Author Brian Dickinson

The community is invited to hear Brian Dickinson, Mount Everest climber and author of Blind Descent, speak about his perilous journey at 9:00AM and 10:45AM, Sunday, July 19th at Lake Sawyer Christian Church.

Former Navy rescue swimmer Brian Dickinson was roughly 1,000 feet from the summit of Mount Everest—also known as “the death zone”—when his Sherpa became ill and had to turn back, leaving Brian with a difficult decision: should he continue to push for the summit, or head back down the mountain? After carefully weighing the options, Brian decided to continue toward the summit—alone. Four hours later, Brian solo summited the highest peak in the world. But the celebration was short-lived. After taking a few pictures, Brian radioed his team to let them know he had summited safely, and got ready to begin his descent. Suddenly, his vision became blurry, his eyes started to burn, and within seconds, he was rendered almost completely blind. All alone at 29,035 feet, low on oxygen, and stricken with snow blindness, Brian was forced to inch his way back down the mountain relying only on his Navy survival training, his gut instinct, and his faith.

Brian will recount his extraordinary experience on Mount Everest and share insights he has gained from his blind descent. He has travelled the world to share his story and has been featured on CNN and Good Morning America. Copies of his book, Blind Descent, will be available for purchase at a discounted price and there will be a meet and greet with him after each service.

Anderson Cooper of CNN had to say this about his journey, “That’s incredible…it’s a great story.”

More information can be found about Brian at his website www.briandickinson.net.

Celtic Prayer Retreat 2015

Reconciliation is at the heart of the gospel message. Through the Holy Spirit, God’s love has flooded our hearts, reshaping and transforming us. We are journeying not just toward renewed relationships and communities, but toward a new creation in which we are all reconciled to the image of God within us, within others, and even within creation.

Our annual retreat on August 7th-9th is your invitation to enter this journey. With the inspirational 6th century Irish monk Columba as our guide, we will walk together through scripture, reflection, worship, and creative spiritual exercises, stirring our imaginations and opening our hearts and minds to the reconciling power of God. There will be plenty of time and space for inner renewal, plus lots of fun, fellowship and food as we journey together toward restoration and wholeness.

We will set aside the busy clutter in our lives and create a quiet space for prayer and renewal as we worship God in a beautiful outdoor cathedral surrounded by maple and cedar trees.

Following the Celtic Christian tradition, this retreat will incorporate the rhythms of work and rest, community and solitude, prayer and biblical study.
