Kids Caring for Oso

Kids Caring for Oso is an informal group of kids, adults, families and community members coming together to encourage children and others reach out to the Oso / Darrington / Arlington communities and relief workers after the devastating March 2014 mudslide. This idea started in our family when we tried to delicately talk with our 5 year old about the tragedy in an age appropriate manner. At that age, one doesn't fully understand what happened or it's far reaching scope (in reality, nor do we). The point that was understood was simple: something bad happened, there are a lot of hurting people, and people all over are trying to help in any way possible. Our child responded by wanting to help, and together we came up with the idea of making encouragement cards and signs for those in need.

Anyone can participate, locally or across the world. If your children or others want to participate, perhaps they could invite their friends too. Examples include: Individuals, public and private schools, preschools and day cares, community groups, homeschool co-ops, play groups, Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) groups, churches / Sunday School / home fellowship or life groups, sports or dance teams, businesses, etc.

Oso Mudslide Benefit Fun Run 10K/5K/1 Mile

The Arlington Runners Club has a 9 year history of hosting charity fun run events in Arlington with the race registration fees donated to local charities.  Last year the Arlington Runners Club hosted a special fun run to benefit the families and victims of the Boston Marathon bombing, when we heard the devastating news of the Oso mudslide disaster and its impact on our community, we had to put on a fun run to raise money for our local community and have partnered with the Skagit Runners Club to do so.  There will be a moment of silence at 10:37a, when the mudslide occurred, with a gong sounded for each person lost in the disaster.  The actual Fun Run will start at 10:45a.

Registration is currently open for this event and 100% of the registration fees will be donated to three (3) local organizations which have been intimately involved in the entire rescue, recovery and ongoing relief efforts.  The organizations selected as recipients of the monies raised are:

1. The Darrington Family Support Services in Darrington has been selected because of their ongoing support of work on the Darrington side of the mudslide.

2. The Oso Mudslide Relief administrated by the Oso Community Church in Oso has been selected because of their ongoing support of work on the Arlington side of the mudslide.

3. The Snohomish County Volunteer Search and Rescue (SCVSAR) has been selected because of their tireless devotion to assisting individuals in crisis throughout Snohomish County.  As their name states, they are volunteers and receive limited public monies.  Most of the SCVSAR members donate their equipment as well as their time and expertise and we would like to help them purchase new or replacement supplies and equipment to help them continue their critical work in our community.

The center of activity for this event is located at the vacant lot on the northwest corner of 172nd Street NE and Airport Boulevard in the Smokey Point community in Arlington.  We are expecting more than 1,000 participants for this event.

Registration is open now.  Visit our website at  or our Facebook event page at  or email us at

The Arlington Runners Club is a 100% volunteer 501(c)(3) organization which host 5 events each year.  The registration monies raised are given to a local charity.

 This year’s events are:

1. River & Rails Run (March 22nd, the mudslide occurred during the event) – the proceeds go to Cocoon House which works with at-risk teens.

2. Walk & Roll Run (May 17th) – the proceeds go to Eagle Wings disAbility which works with the special needs community.

3. Rescue Run (September 20th) – the proceeds go to the Snohomish County Volunteer Search and Rescue Operations Support Unit.

4. Airport Run for HOPE! (October 18th) – the proceeds go to Housing Hope which works with distressed and low income families with emergency, temporary and long-term housing needs.

5. Christmas Run (December 6th) – historically the funds went to a local chapter of Toys for Tots, this year we will be donating the money to the Oso relief efforts.

Apologetics Forum: "The Biblical Basis for Apologetics" by Phil Fernandes

Join us at the monthly Apologetics Symposium as we hear featured guest speakers present on topics relevant to Christians.

Dr. Fernandes shows from the Scriptures that Christian Apologetics (the rational defense of the faith) is clearly based in the Scriptures. The Bible speaks about God revealing Himself to man in His creation and in man's conscience. And, the Apostles defended the faith using both eyewitness testimony and their own testimonies. Hence, traditional apologetics is biblical. Dr. Fernandes will also discuss different ways to defend the faith. About the Speaker:
Dr. Phil Fernandes is the president of the Institute of Biblical Defense, which he founded in 1990 to teach Christians how to defend the Christian Faith. He is also the pastor of Trinity Bible Fellowship in Silverdale, Washington, and teaches philosophy, world religions, theology, and apologetic's for CrossPoint Academy and the Imago Dei Institute (formerly Cascade Bible College).

Bellevue Jazz Festival presents East-West Trumpet Summit

Trumpeters Ray Vega & Thomas Marriott make up the front line of this power-packed quintet, featuring a special guest appearance by pianist George Colligan. Both veterans of their respective scenes, the two trumpeters bring their formidable abilities and influences to bear on arrangements of jazz classics and original material. Representing the sensibilities and styles of both coasts of the United States, this band covers a good deal of stylistic territory while remaining both lyrical and exciting.

Bellevue Jazz Festival presents Poncho Sanchez and his Latin Jazz Band

His influences are numerous, but among the more prominent figures that inform his music are two of the primary architects of Latin jazz – conga drummer and composer Chano Pozo and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie.
