South Pacific Musical

Newport Covenant Church, 12800 Coal Creek Pkwy SE, Bellevue
Friday, May 3, 2013 to Sunday, May 5, 2013
7pm; 3pm Sundays

The classic musical tale of love and prejudice amongst the backdrop of war.

Enter this exotic world, with its endless ocean, the tiny specks of coral called islands, the swaying coconut palms, and the sky that has a canary yellow sun.  Meet the men and women caught up in the drama of a big war.  Be immersed in the story of Nurse Nellie Forbush who falls in love with a French planter by the name of Emile DeBeque, and the young Marine who falls in love with a beautiful Tonkinese girl.  Prejudice was very alive in the 1940’s and as our characters struggle with it, we are reminded us of how hurtful it is and how precious love is.  Love, humor and drama collide with delightful music in this production.  The musical was written by Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein and based on James Michener’s Tales of the South Pacific.  We invite you to attend this outstanding production featuring musical favorites as: Some Enchanted Evening, Younger Than Springtime, I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Out Of My Hair, and Bali Ha’i. The large cast of over thirty and orchestra feature outstanding talent from within and around the community on the Eastside.  Nellie Forbush is played by Shannon Fix, Emile DeBecque by Scott Lee, Lieutenant Joe Cable by Larry Hanson, Luther Billis by Bill Hansen, and Nelea Lloyd plays Bloody Mary.

Director’s Vicki Walch and Tom Frodsham say, “We can really see the need for quality Community Theater here on the Eastside that is appropriate for families and that is our goal.”  They are expecting a good turnout for the production of “SOUTH PACIFIC”.  “The Sound of Music”, presented by NEWPORT SEASON OF THE ARTS in 2012, drew an audience of over 2000.  Once again Directors Walch and Frodsham are amazed at the talent of the group of fine actors they get to work with.

NEWPORT SEASON OF THE ARTS, a creative arts ministry program is presented by Newport Covenant Church.   It offers a ten-month season that encompasses a rich program of new theatrical works, new music, jazz, classical music, musical theater, children’s theater, and more.  This program is designed to encourage community involvement.  Newport Covenant Church has been producing high-quality theatrical productions since the year 2000.

“SOUTH PACIFIC” will be held on two weekends – April 26, 27 and 28; and May 3, 4 and 5.  Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:00 p.m., with the doors opening at 6:30 pm.  Sunday matinee performances are at 3:00 with the doors opening at 2:30.  The production is appropriate for the entire family and the public is invited to attend.  The performance is offered to the public at no charge and it will be festival seating.  There will be a free-will offering taken.  For more information go to or call Newport Covenant Church at 425.747.0515.

This 20-something guy then proceeded to open up a bit about how he'd grown up in a faith-filled home, but once college came around, he'd opted more for late Saturday nights with friends than early Sunday mornings at church."I guess I just kinda fell away," he continued. He looked at the ground as he talked, probably waiting for me to offer a cliche or some advice, but instead I said: Read More
