  • My daughter Camille and I had the chance to go on a mission trip to Guatemala with a group from our church earlier this summer. We were working in the communities surrounding the Guatemala City dump. People scratch out their existence there scavenging for whatever they can recycle, sell, or make into something in the trash. It’s pretty overwhelming to think about, even more to experience firsthand.

  • Imagine being the captain of a ship and realizing that the anchor you just had the crew throw into the water is made of plastic and won’t hold the ship where you want it to stay. In fact, maybe you get distracted and don’t even realize you’ve been adrift until it’s still too late. Life is full of false anchors. These are things we rely on for security, it could be..

  • Happy Easter! Okay maybe you’re thinking that I’m a little late. After all, Easter is over, right? My family and I go to a church that is in some ways pretty contemporary, but on the other hand still observes some fairly old traditions. One of those is that Easter is a season, rather than just a day. You may or may not be interested in

  • OH COME ON!!! HOW DO YOU NOT GIVE MARSHAWN THE BALL ON THE ½ YARDLINE!?!?!?! Yes I was saying that too on Sunday night. I’m not writing this to pile on the Seahawks. I love the way Pete Carroll stood tall and took responsibility for what happened. He’s a great coach and the Seahawks wouldn’t be who they are without him. I’m also glad that my mistakes are nowhere near as

  • My 16 year old daughter Camille wrote this after we got into a conversation about our identity as simultaneously fallen human beings and children of God. I thought I would share it with you – and I hope you find it encouraging.

  • I was originally thinking about writing about how grateful I am, heading into this holiday season, that my family and I have been so incredibly blessed in so many ways. We have been, and I am. But my friend’s situation got me thinking about how the sting of suffering, whether it’s physical, relational, or psychological, can be even more acute in a season when we have a cultural expectation of joy and happiness.

  • Sometimes we are too effective in drilling things into our kids. My wife and I are very frugal, and we’ve really emphasized being wise with money with our kids. It’s worked a little with our son Meyer, and a LOT with our daughter Camille. Maybe it’s worked too well with her

  • When is it easiest to be thankful? Maybe on Thanksgiving, when the calendar tells us to give thanks, or when something really dramatic and great happens, or when something really dramatic and bad doesn't happen. But what about the things we just expect?

  • My daughter Camille is really into theatre at school. Just this week they had auditions for two different shows that the school is putting on next school year. She was walking around our house practicing a Southern accent, a proper British accent, and a Cockney accent. She prepared and researched but when the audition came she says she felt like

  • My daughter, Camille, frequently makes me proud. She did it again a few weeks ago when she said she wanted to make some kind of sacrifice for Lent. Giving things up for Lent has not been a tradition in our house, so she was starting something new. My wife and I figured if our high school freshman was going to be willing to make a sacrifice, we should too. And I’m glad we did. I’ve discovered that

  • Make The Call

“I need to call my friend and have lunch, it’s been way too long!” I think this and then forget. Does this ever happen to you? I regret this happening to me all too much in the past 7 years. Since I got married and had kids life is like one big tornado! My excuses are that I’m just too tired tonight, or I can’t because this week is crazy, my kids have too many activities, or my husband works a lot and I feel guilty taking the time, plus I just can’t spend the money. Any of these sound familiar? The thing is what if that person is no longer there to call? Read More
