Courageous Motherhood

My parents got divorced when I was seventeen due to my dad's addictions. It took a lot of courage for my mom to remove us from the situation. I cried the day her and I moved from our 3,000 sq ft house to a two-bedroom apartment. My brother is four years older so he was already living on his own. At seventeen I was a bit self centered. I recall thinking about how all of this was affecting me and my life. Now, as a wife and mother of two kids, I put myself in my mom's shoes; I think how incredibly difficult that time was for her. Yet, she always put me first. She got on her feet, supported me through college, ensured her and I still had fun traditions like the Nordstrom sale (though we may have done more window shopping than in years past) and showed me that moving forward can always be an option.

My mom has shaped the person I am today and continues to do so even well into my adulthood. I honestly do not know where I would be without her courage, sense of humor, patience, compassion and drive.

Mom, thank you for always making me laugh, for putting my needs first even when that was probably painful and difficult and for being the most fun, involved and caring “Gama” my kids could ever be blessed with.

Take this Mothers Day weekend to not only be proud of the mother that you are, but to also take a moment to thank the woman (or person) in your life who has helped shape the mom, wife, employee, friend etc that you are today.

Happy Mothers Day to all of you. It is NOT an easy job. You are shaping the lives of kids and grandkids and one day, they will realize this and thank you for it.
