The transition from elementary to junior high is a very important one for young people. There is a cognitive change that occurs during early adolescence. Children make a shift from being solely concrete thinkers, to growing towards the ability to think abstractly. For parents, along with Christian educators, this exciting time of new developmental abilities brings an advancement into academic and spiritual accountability.
Academically, at Renton Christian School, there is a transfer of increased student responsibility. We use the following methods to accomplish this:
- Online software to post daily lessons, homework, and an up-to-date gradebook.
- Students are held accountable for assignments turned in on time. If they do not follow through with their responsibilities, there are daily emails sent directly to parents to alert them to late and missing assignments.
- Group projects that require students to mature their planning and communication skills while working collaboratively with other peers. A strategic life skill for both home, as well as the future work place.
Spiritually, this abstract thinking allows students to recognize and question the contradictions they see in society and the media in contrast to God’s Word. As Christian mentors, we come alongside parents to disciple their children towards a life where they can differentiate between the relative truth of this world, and God’s absolute truth.
With a common Biblical framework, we reemphasize parents’ instruction by guiding classroom discussions with real-life applications of how to make Christ-like decisions. This requires a transparent, honest, and caring relationship with students.
We step out of the classroom and mobilize students to serve the community, volunteering as students empathize with people who are struggling, and reach out and serve those in need.
Ultimately, we pray this partnership between home and school can culminate with students’ largest step of accountability: to develop a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. That decision to take hold of faith as their own is our ultimate goal as Christian parents and educators alike.
It’s a hard transition for young minds as they begin to experience the world for themselves and develop their own responsbility and thinking in the world. We strive to walk alongside them during this transition, guiding them toward a christ-centered approach to life!
