Coordinated explosions targeting some of Thailand’s most popular resort cities and beach towns took the lives of at least four people and wounded dozens more. Police said today that 10 foreigners were injured in the violence, some of the worst here since the military seized power in a coup two years ago. It is not clear who is behind the attacks.
U.S. swimmers Katie Ledecky and Michael Phelps highlight today in Rio as they will each compete for gold medals in some of their signature events. Katie Ledecky races in the 800-meter freestyle and Michael Phelps will look to win gold in the 100-meter butterfly for a fourth consecutive Olympics after he earned his 22nd gold medal yesterday. Also today, the first gold medals in track and field at these Olympics will be handed out in the women’s 10,000-meter final, the men’s 20-kilometer race walk and the women’s shot put.
Jerry Sandusky, was the man convicted in 2012 of abusing 10 boys-––He is expected to testify for the first time today to appeal his conviction four years ago. The former Penn State assistant football coach did not testify during his 2012 trial, which is one of the issues he has pointed to in arguing that his lawyers at the time were ineffective.
A Thursday evening car accident in Tukwila sparked a bizarre and violent chain of events that ended with police shooting and killing a gun-wielding man. The incident started when police responded to a three-vehicle crash near the Tukwila Police Department at about 5:20 p.m. When officers went outside to investigate they learned one of the drivers had been shot, according to Mike Murphy with the Tukwila Police Department. ‘Apparently a man had been shot up off of 57th and was able to get into his car and drive away from the scene. As he was speeding toward the police station he crashed into a couple of cars,’ Murphy said.
