If you are like me, you are being pulled in a million directions: work, taking care of kids, fostering friendships, RSVP’ing for b-day parties, hosting get-togethers for friends, baby showers, weddings! I look at this list and I realize on a daily basis something important has missed the list. I have made no time for Him. I am distracted to the point that it is keeping me from having a close relationship with Him.
Pricilla Shirer, Christian speaker and author of “Hearing from God” says, “The enemy is out to distract you. Because if he can keep you distracted then you won’t have time to grow in Christ.” If you are always on the go how are you going to hear from HIM? If you keep going & going but you aren’t spiritually growing, than you are distracted from the life He has for you. (Luke 8:7)
It was like a light bulb moment! I started to think, “What are my distractions? How can I get off this rollercoaster and start really enjoying my life instead of feeling empty, obligated and tired all the time?” I realized for me it was cutting out certain relationships that I knew were toxic, cutting out mindless television at night when the kids go to bed, cutting out saying yes to everybody else and instead saying YES to God first.
1 Kings 19:12 says that when God spoke to Elijah it wasn’t in a wind or earthquake or fire, it was in a gentle whisper. If you want to hear God whisper to you, you have to be quiet.
So my question to you……What are your distractions?
