Typically, we frequently like to claim that for ourselves – ‘Hey, I’m only human!’ But for the waitress, the ticket agent, or the phone center representative? Yeah, not so much. We expect them to be perfect, because after all… they’re serving US.
Occasionally, I’ll accidentally build someone up in my mind as super-human… not in the “superman’ sense, but more that they’ve really got their act together. Their family, marriage, and career looks perfect, so their spiritual life must be awesome. Often when I’ve done that, I’ve discovered the hard way that their life isn’t as ‘put-together’ as I imagined it to be, and that they don’t belong on the pedestal that I put them on… because they’re human. In fact, that pedestal belongs only to Jesus, and Him alone.
This is a source of great hope for me, and I hope it can be a great encouragement to you, too… if you’ve fallen victim to seeing everyone else as perfect, but not you. The neighbor or friend or co worker who looks so ‘put-together’? They’re probably not… and they might even be thinking that same thing about you! The true gift, the thing to cling to, is found in the simple words of Brennan Manning… “God loves you as you are, not as you should be… because none of us are as we should be.”
