Happy New Year! I hope 2016 has gotten off to a great start for you. On the last day of 2015, I was driving along the scenic route to Enumclaw and I looked up in awe at Mt. Rainier and the foothills as they presided majestically over the pastoral farm land. The day was exquisitely clear and sunny without a cloud in sight, so the view was spectacular as it revealed all the colorful hues and details of the awesome snow-covered mountain and foothills. Mt. Rainier is so huge it looked like I could drive there in no time at all. But at 14,411 feet it was still a couple of hours away. I felt very fortunate to have such a gorgeous sight to behold on the last day of the year. It gave me such a feeling of hope and joy for the new year!
We are so fortunate to live in the beautiful Pacific Northwest – especially in the Puget Sound area where we can see Mt. Rainier from so many vantage points. Wouldn’t it be great if we had a crystal clear view of Mt. Rainier and all the foothills in vivid detail every day? But then again, maybe we’d get used to seeing such a magnificent sight every day and take our incredible views for granted. After all, when we see Mt. Rainier on hazy days we probably aren’t always awestruck.
Sometimes thick clouds prevent sunlight from exposing not only the cliffs and crevices but they obscure the foothills and mountain completely. It got me thinking about how life is like those clouds when they hide Mt. Rainier. Our experiences from day to day can often fog up our perspective on life.
Your day or past year may have been reflecting the color of laughter and joy, or it may have been clouded by life’s struggles. Either way, just know that God has been there with you through it all and he will be with you in the future – rejoicing with you during the happy times and in the difficult times he will be holding your hand and sometimes even carrying you when you don’t have the strength to make it through another day.
There is hope and incredible beauty behind the clouds. We just need to hold on and trust God that the sun will break through the clouds and we can see the beauty of his plan for our life both here on earth and in heaven on that glorious day when we finally meet Him face to face.

Love in Christ,
Psalm 121 (NIV)
A song of ascents.
1 I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.
3 He will not let your foot slip—
he who watches over you will not slumber;
4 indeed, he who watches over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.
5 The Lord watches over you—
the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
6 the sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night.
7 The Lord will keep you from all harm—
he will watch over your life;
8 the Lord will watch over your coming and going
both now and forevermore.
