Are you a ‘highlighter?’ What I mean is, when you read, do you read interactively like I do with a pen and a highlighter, making notes in the margins and dog-earing pages to go back to? I think I get this from my mom. My favorite part of borrowing books from her is her notes in the margins.
Sometimes, I feel like God is a ‘highlighter’ too. Throughout the course of my day, it might be a conversation, or something I read, or a song I hear on the radio, and I feel like God’s Holy Spirit invisibly highlights it for me. I don’t know how else to explain it, other than I pause for a brief moment because it feels like He directed my attention to something.
The latest example was the other day when my husband was putting our three-year-old to bed.
Or should I say, back to bed. Again. Ethan kept telling Joel he ‘heard a noise.’
On about the fifth time, Joel kindly but sternly said: ‘I plan on being awake for hours, Ethan. It’s my job to listen for noises. It’s your job to go to sleep.’
Amazingly, Ethan didn’t get out of bed after that. Maybe he just finally wore himself out, or perhaps Ethan accepted his ‘job’ because he trusted his father to do his.
In the other room, I’d been praying through some of my worries. I was about to start circling back to the anxious thoughts/prayers when I felt God’s gentle highlighter. ‘It’s my job to sort out those details. It’s your job to go to sleep.’
