Quick hypothetical situation: As usual, you’re juggling a lot of things at once. Then a friend/family member/neighbor/stranger asks you for a favor and you say yes, because, well, they need help and you want to be available. You find yourself stretched beyond your limits and overwhelmed.
Did I say hypothetical?
I think what I mean to say is ACTUAL REAL LIFE EVERYDAY SITUATION.
As one who struggles with this daily, I have printed out a poem that I keep by my desk to remind me where to direct my “yes” and my “no.” I hope it helps you, too.

Clearing
by Martha Postlewaite
Do not try to save
the whole world
or do anything grandiose.
Instead, create
a clearing
in the dense forest
of your life
and wait there
patiently,
until the song
that is your life
falls into your own cupped hands
and you
recognize and greet it.
Only then will you know
how to give yourself
to this world
so worth of rescue
