‘What have you done for me lately?’ I think that mentality is engrained in who we are as Americans. We’ve been called a meritocracy… a society where you are judged by what you achieve. And there are some good things about that. But for me it gets tiring. There’s always more to accomplish. And there’s always someone else who has accomplished more than I have.
I’m glad that God doesn’t base His love for me on what I have accomplished. Jesus doesn’t say “what have you done for me lately?” He says “look what I have done for you.” In fact, He wants us to depend on Him, not on our own talents and abilities. In John 15, Jesus says ‘I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.’ There’s a good dose of humility! But it’s also comforting to me to know that my future is in hands far more capable than mine. I hope it is for you too.
Do you feel that same pressure to achieve? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below.
