My brother is a genius. I never thought those words would come out of my mouth, (or on to a page), but it’s true. My brother who pulled my pigtails, ran off and left me in the dark to try to catch the school bus, thought it was funny that I was embarrassed to ride in his 69’ Blue Nova…that same brother is now dispelling great wisdom.
My niece, Isabella, my brother’s daughter, is staying with us for the summer to help us with our two-year- old, Maggie and three-year-old, Della. She’s 17. While I have never seen a person be able to change a diaper with one hand, Isabella does one better. With her iPod ear bud in one ear and the fingers of her left hand texting, she is able to successfully change a diaper! HA! Times have changed.
When talking to my brother on the phone last night, he gave me some advice. Sometimes the family internet “mysteriously” goes down. My brother told me that when everyone seems too attached to their devices and withdrawn from each other, he pulls the plug on the internet. He doesn’t say anything, but all of a sudden something miraculous happens. The kids begin to come out of their rooms. They catch up on what each other is doing and they get out the family board games.
So here’s to pulling the plug.
And maybe my niece will stop diapering the one that’s already potty trained. (HA! I made that up!) ~Amy
